KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Match 36 of the ongoing IPL 2020 edition saw the KL Rahul-led Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) stun defending champions Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) in Dubai.
  • Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) locked horns with defending champions Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) in the following encounter, which also went to the Super Over twice.
  • The match wasn’t a mouth-watering one as KXIP occupied the last spot, prior to the contest, whereas MI were again eyeing a return to the top spot in the points table, replacing Delhi Capitals (DC).
  • Batting first, Rohit Sharma-led MI wasn’t off to the best of starts as the skipper, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan went back to the pavillion. Arshdeep Singh’s rapid form continued as he led to poor shows from MI’s top-order.
  • While Quinton de Kock scored his fourth half-century on the trot, he perished for a 43-ball 53 off Chris Jordan.
  •  KXIP’s death-over woes continued to haunt them as they conceded 59 runs in the last four overs. Kieron Pollard’s 34*, off 12 balls, and Nathan Coulter-Nile’s 24*, from the same number of deliveries, led MI to 176-6 in 20 overs.
In reply, MI removed in-form opener, Mayank Agarwal, soon as he once again fell to Jasprit Bumrah.
  • While Chris Gayle got a start and was keeping the scoreboard moving with Rahul, Glenn Maxwell and he perished off Rahul Chahar.
  • On the other hand, Rahul continued to stitch another sublime inning from his end, doing nothing silly and still striking at 150.

  • Rahul showed his class versus Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Coulter-Nile whereas the batsman also read the variations of Chahar and Krunal with ease. Following his sublime 77, Aakash Chopra tweeted,

  • Eventually, the chase went down to the last over due to Bumrah’s stunning spell, 3 for 23, but Deepak Hooda and Jordan’s finishing skills reduced the equation to 2 off 1 ball. A freakish run-out pushed the game to the Super Over.

DOUBLE SUPER OVER

  • While Bumrah conceded only five, MI were sure-shot favourites to maintain their winning streak and extend it to seven in the Super Over run-chase. However, Mohammad Shami leaked the exact same amount of runs for another Super Over.
  • A controversy erupted as KXIP team management were involved in an animated discussion with on-field umpires as Kieron Pollard came out to bat in the second Super Over. As he was named as one of the batters in the initial Super Over, rules stated otherwise.
  •  Things went ahead as the drama continued in the second Super Over. Pollard and Hardik combined to take MI to 11/1 as Jordan took on the responsibility with the ball for KXIP. In reply, Chris Gayle and Mayank finally led the game to a conclusion with their blistering strokeplay to take KXIP to the sixth spot and stage an upset over MI.
With this, MI’s six-match winning streak also came to an end.
