Kochi: Special NIA court convicts alleged Islamic State fighter; quantum of sentence on Monday

  • A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Kochi on Friday convicted Subahani Haja Moideen, who allegedly fought for the Islamic State (IS), for supporting the activities of the terror outfit.
  • The special NIA court will pronounce the quantum of sentence in the matter on Monday.
  • As per the news agency ANI, the court noted that the charges under Section 125 (waging war against Asiatic power in alliance with the Government of India), 120-B (criminal conspiracy), and several relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act exist in the case.
  • The convict, Subahani Haja Moideen, hails from the Idukki district of Kerala. He was arrested by the NIA in 2016 for allegedly supporting activities of the Islamic State.
  • Moideen had allegedly joined the Islamic State in 2015 and had received training in Iraq and Syria. He also took part in waging war against the Iraqi government. The agency also suspected that Moideen may have had detailed knowledge about the 2015 terror attacks in Paris that left 130 people dead and hundreds injured.

  • While informing the Parliament, Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy said that 122 accused, associated with the ISIS have been arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He further said that the premier probe agency has registered 17 cases related to the presence of IS in several states.
  • Highlighting the presence of the terrorist organisation in the country, the government said that NIA investigations have revealed that Islamic State is most active in Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
  • “Some instances of individuals from different states, including southern states, having joined Islamic State (IS) have come to the notice of central and state security agencies,” he said in a written response to a question.
