How does HSRP work?

KEY STORY

  • Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) mandates all vehicles in the country sold before 1 April, 2019 to have a high security registration plate and colour coded stickers.
  • Since last year, there has been immense focus on HSRPs following Delhi transport department’s directive for vehicle owners in the state to get high security registration plates. We have spoken about it plenty too.
  • However, some people still wonder how the system really works. Well, buckle up and read on to see HSRP in India works. Let’s start with what high security registration plates actually are. Made of aluminium, HSRPs are essentially number plates.
  • The plate also gets hot-stamped chromium-based 20 mm X 20 mm hologram of the Ashoka Chakra in blue on the top left corner, whereas at the bottom left corner, it gets a 10-digit permanent identification number (PIN) laser branded on the reflective sheeting.
  • Additionally, HSRPs also include a hot-stamped film applied on the numbers and letters bearing the inscription “INDIA” at a 45-degree angle.
Now, let us answer the key question: How do high security registration plates work?
    1. Once the plate is completed, it is affixed to the vehicle using at least two non-reusable snap-on locks. After that is done, the unique HSRP is electronically linked to the vehicle.
    2. Since HSRPs come with non-removable snap-on locks, it makes it quite difficult for the plates to be removed or tampered with. This makes it easier for authorities to trace vehicles in case of theft.
    3. HSRPs are issued only after provision of information such as the vehicle’s engine number, chassis number, etc. This helps prevent counterfeiting of the vehicle registration plates.
    4. HSRPs use a uniform font and pattern for the motor vehicle registration number, which makes it substantially easier for police personnel to read and note down vehicle registration plates.
