KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • IPL 2020 playoffs: Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi Capitals (DC) met David Warner-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 2 at the Abu Dhabi Stadium on Sunday (November 08).
  • After 58 games filled with intense drama, twists and turn, it all came down to Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi Capitals (DC) up against David Warner-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 2 for a place in the IPL 2020 final, where defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) are sitting pretty since their Qualifier 1 win on Thursday (November 05).

  • While Shreyas Iyer-led DC had been thrashed by SRH twice in the group stages, it was a new day at the office as both sides locked horns in Abu Dhabi on Sunday evening (November 08).
  • Opting to bat first, in order to put scoreboard pressure on the opposition, Iyer & Co. managed a healthy 189 for 3 in 20 overs.
  • DC think-tank tinkered with their batting line-up as they promoted Marcus Stoinis to make use of the powerplay overs.

  • The same happened as the Aussie all-rounder found the gaps at regular intervals and took the scoreboard to 86 for no loss in 8 overs.
  • However, Rashid Khan rattled his stumps for a fine 38. Iyer, at No. 3, struggled to get going but formed an alliance with in-form opener Shikhar Dhawan, who went past the fifty-run mark once again in the season.
  • Riding on Dhawan’s sublime 78 and Shimron Hetmyer’s 22-ball 42, laced with 4 fours and a solitary six, DC managed to post a healthy 189 for 3.
  • In reply, SRH banked on a solid start by skipper Warner. The Aussie opener, who had lost Wriddhiman Saha due to injury, failed to get going in the vital run-chase.
  • Kagiso Rabada, who had a forgettable outing versus MI in Qualifier 1, removed the left-hander with an unplayable delivery to clean up his stumps and put SRH behind right from the word go.
  • Priyam Garg and Manish Pandey got starts but fell soon as SRH were reduced to 44 for 3. Kane Williamson, who led SRH to Qualifier 2 with a spirited 50* versus Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Eliminator, once again stuck around and had planned to dig deep in the run-chase. While he stitched a handy 46-run partnership with Jason Holder, the West Indian’s departure added to his woes.
  • Williamson found another able partner in Abdul Samad, however, he fell against the run of play with the required run-rate rising with each passing delivery. His 45-ball 67 kept his side alive but following his departure, the writing was on the wall despite cameos from Samad and Rashid.

  • Stoinis and Rabada combined to share seven scalps as their regular breakthroughs propelled DC to their first-ever IPL final. DC will now take on MI in the summit clash on Tuesday (November 10) in Dubai.
