KEY STORY

  • The session will be held from September 13 to 24 in Bengaluru by strictly adhering to COVID-19 protocols. It may be noted that since Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai-led government took charge, this will be the first legislature session that is being conducted in the state.
  • Previously, the BJP-led government in Karnataka was planning to hold the session at Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi.
  • According to reports, Basavaraj Horatti – legislative council chairman who hails from Dharwad – was also in favour of the session in Belagavi. However, considering the pandemic, the state government decided to convene the session in Bengaluru.
  • As a result, the MLAs and people of north Karnataka were reportedly disappointed as they have been expecting a session in their region after a prolonged wait.

CONCLUSION

  • Furthermore, it is highly expected that the opposition parties will charge the government for alleged corruption in the procurement of PPE and Rapid Antigen Test kits and other medical equipment during the second wave.
  • Notably, regarding the exorbitant rates at which the government has reportedly procured these items, the public accounts committee has sought an explanation. The committee is headed by Congress MLA Ramalinga Reddy.
