  • Amit Mishra spun a web around Mumbai Indians (MI) as Delhi Capitals (DC) brought an end to a five-match winless streak against the defending champions in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 with a six-wicket win on Tuesday. Mishra picked up a four-wicket haul to run through the MI batting line-up and close the gap on Lasith Malinga on the list of IPL’s all-time leading wicket-takers.

  • Opting to bat first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, MI were off to a shaky start as they lost opener Quinton de Kock cheaply on 1 before skipper Rohit Sharma (44) and Suryakumar Yadav (24) added a 58-run stand for the second wicket. Rohit looked in brilliant touch and was keen on notching up a big knock but his stay in the middle was cut short by his biggest IPL nemesis Mishra.
  • Mishra got rid of the MI skipper for the record seventh time in IPL to derail MI’s batting. He didn’t stop there and went on to pick the crucial wickets of Hardik Pandya (0), Kieron Pollard (2), and Ishan Kishan (26) to finish with excellent figures of 4/24 in his four overs and help Delhi Capitals restrict MI to 137/9 in 20 overs.
  • With his four-wicket haul, Mishra also bridged the gap between him and Malinga on the list of IPL’s leading wicket-takers of all-time. Mishra now has 164 wickets to his name in 152 games and is just seven short of surpassing Malinga (170) as IPL’s leading wicket-taker of all time.
  • In reply, Delhi Capitals chased down the target without breaking a sweat as opener Shikhar Dhawan continued his prolific run. Dhawan scored 45 off 42 balls and avoided taking any risks to ensure he can put his team in a commanding position in the run-chase.
  • Dhawan combined with Steve Smith (33) to add 53 runs for the second wicket after Prithvi Shaw was removed cheaply on 7.
  • Lalit Yadav (22*) and Shimron Hetmyer (14*) then took DC  over the line in the final over as Rishabh Pant’s men avenged the defeat in the final of IPL 2020 last year. DC had not beaten MI even once in four meetings last season but ensured the winless streak was broken in their very first meeting this year. DC have now won three out of their first four games this season and are placed at the second spot with 6 points from 4 games.
