Following the exposé by Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya about the alleged hospital bed scam in the city amid a resurge in Covid-19 cases, the Bengaluru Police has arrested another accused in connection with the case, Sandeep Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), informed on Tuesday.
-
“Another accused, Anthony – working as a marketing executive in Sapthagiri Hospital – arrested. He took money from patients to get beds allotted to them,” Patil said.
-
With this arrest, so far 8 accused have been taken into police custody out of the total 10, while 2 others are Covid-19 positive.
-
Surya had last week ‘unearthed’ an “unholy nexus of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials, representatives of zonal helplines, and hospitals who allegedly created a false scarcity of beds in the city and offered them at higher rates to the needy”.
-
He alleged that the nexus used to first book beds meant for Covid patients in the name of the asymptomatic ones, blocking them and allotting later to the needy patients against a premium.
-
Meanwhile, the Karnataka Police on Monday arrested two people for their alleged involvement in the illegal sale of Remdesivir injections at exorbitant prices in Bengaluru.
CONCLUSION
-
The accused – Malathesh and Shanmukhayya – stole vials from hospitals they used to work at and sell them at Rs 15,000-Rs 25,000 per vial, Kamal Pant, the Commissioner of Police of Bengaluru City, said. The police have seized 17 Remdesivir injections from the duo and an investigation is underway.

Central Crime Branch of Bengaluru had last month nabbed three people for illegally stocking and black marketing Remdesivir.
