  • It is now mandatory for drivers in Bengaluru to wear masks even if they are alone in the car. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Tuesday night issued ‘clarification’ on the rules in place to curb the spread of Covid-19.
  • As per the clarification, even if a person is alone in the car and window panes are up or down, he or she must wear a mask. The rule also applies to two-wheelers with or without a pillion rider.
  • A fine of Rs 250 will be imposed for violating norms like not wearing masks or failing to maintain physical distance.
  • The BBMP’s mandatory mask order is in contradiction of the Union Health Ministry’s advisory saying that it was not necessary to wear masks while driving alone in a car.
  • The Centre, in its September advisory, had said that all people using vehicles as drivers or co-passengers must wear a mask.
  • Later, the Union health ministry had clarified that it was not necessary to wear masks while driving alone in a car.
