Centre to repeal farm laws, announces PM Modi; urges farmers to end protest

  • In a major development that ends the year-long stalemate between the Centre and protesting farmers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that the Central government will repeal the three contentious farm laws it passed last year in Parliament.
  • Before issuing an apology for “failing” to make some farmers understand the importance of the farm laws, PM Modi urged the protesting farmers to go back to their homes and assured them the farm laws will be repealed.
  • During his address, he stressed, “Goal of three farm laws was to empower farmers, especially small farmers. The three laws were in farmers’ benefit but we couldn’t convince a section of farmers despite best efforts.”
  • “In the coming Parliament session, we will take constitutional measures to repeal these farm laws,” announced PM Modi.
  • Farmers have been protesting the government’s three farm laws since had passed the Farmer’s Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020.
