HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee on Sunday passed a resolution to make Rahul Gandhi president of the party with immediate effect. After passing the resolution, Delhi Congress president Anil Chaudhary said, “Rahul ji is the only one who can inspire Congress workers. All his predictions are coming true from farmers issue to ills of the Goods and Service Tax (GST). He’s shown his leadership ability. So we passed the resolution to make him Congress president again.”
  • The resolution comes just days after it was announced that a new president of the Grand Old Party would be elected in June – after elections in several key states, including Bengal and Tamil Nadu, would have concluded.
  • Rahul Gandhi, the MP from Wayanad, had resigned as the Congress chief in 2019 after the party suffered a defeat in the Lok Sabha election. He has been firm on not resuming as the head of the party since then. The void was filled in by his mother Sonia Gandhi, who took over as the Congress interim chief since Rahul resigned.

Randeep Singh Surjewala

In December, senior party leader Randeep Surjewala had said that 99.9 per cent of people in Congress want Rahul Gandhi as their president, adding that the party will soon start the procedure to elect a new party president.
“Party will soon start the procedure to elect a new party president. Electoral College of Congress, AICC members, Congress workers & members will choose who’s best suited. 99.9 per cent of people including me want Rahul Gandhi to be elected as party president,” Randeep Surjewala had said.
Last August, around 12 Congress leaders including some ex-ministers had written to Sonia Gandhi for a complete overhaul of the organisational structure of the party and changes to the leadership. Some close to Rahul had also written to the CWC pressing for the Gandhi scion’s return as chief.
