KEY STORY

  • There is no denying that promising young talent Devdutt Padikkal became a revelation for the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last year.
  •  Padikkal was a star turnout for the Kohli-led side in the 2020 edition of the cash-rich league as the young opener amassed 475 runs for the Bangalore giants.
  • Gearing up for the 14th season of domestic cricket’s biggest extravaganza, Padikkal has opened up about sharing the lockerroom with legendary AB de Villiers and skipper Kohli at RCB. The 20-year-old also spoke at length about batting with the charismatic leader of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the cash-rich league.
  • Padikkal praised Kohli and de Villiers’ passion for the game before discussing the impact of the RCB skipper in improving his game. In an interview with the Hindustan Times, Padikkal explained how Kohli’s batting style makes the game pretty easy for his teammate.
  • “He plays at such a high level; when you are batting with him, you feel you have to really push yourself and match the standard at which he plays. That helped improve my game. Batting with him, he makes the game pretty easy,” Padikkal said.
  • “He understands the game so well, when to take a chance and when to pull back, and when to really go after the bowling. When you have so much knowledge and experience it makes our job very easy at the other end,” the RCB opener added.

CONCLUSION

  • In the build-up to the IPL 2021, Padikkal capped off a remarkable domestic season as the RCB opener took the Vijay Hazare Trophy by a storm. With scores of 52, 97, 152, 126 not out, 145 not out, and 101, Padikkal finished the celebrated tournament as the highest run-scorer with 673 runs in six matches at a stellar average of 168.25.
  • Looking forward to having another fruitful season with Kohli-led RCB, Padikkal also said that his ultimate goal is to play for the Indian national team in the longest format of the game. Padikkal is expected to open RCB’s innings with run-machine Kohli in the 14th season of the IPL.
