  • The Centre on Wednesday issued a gazette notification to repeal the three farm laws.  The Act will now be called Farm Laws Repeal Act, 2021.
  • “Farmers (Empowerment&Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance&Farm Services Act, 2020, Farmers’ Produce Trade&Commerce (Promotion & Facilitation) Act, 2020 & Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 are hereby repealed,” the notification read.
  • On Monday, the Parliament had passed the bill to repeal the three contentious laws with the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha giving their approval in quick succession.
  • The repeal bill was passed by voice vote within minutes of its introduction in both the Houses but opposition members continued their protest demanding a discussion on farmers’ issues, including legal sanctity to Minimum Support Price (MSP) of crops and compensation to families of farmers who died during the year-long agitation.
  • Introducing the repeal bill in the two Houses, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar heaped praises on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for keeping his word as the government brought the bill on the very first day of the Winter session of Parliament.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to the farmers on Guru Parb and announced that the government would withdraw the three farm laws.
  • Urging the protesters to return home, the PM said “let us make a fresh start”.
  • “While apologizing to the nation, I want to say with a sincere and pure heart that maybe something was lacking in our efforts that we could not explain the truth to some of our farmer brothers,” he added.
  • However, farm unions in an open letter to the Prime Minister listed their remaining demands, including MSP guarantee, Electricity Amendment Bill and action against the Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni.
  • SKM also sought a memorial for over 700 farmers who had died during the protests and immediate withdrawal of cases lodged against protesters.
