  • BJP national general secretary CT Ravi on Wednesday tried to drag in Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar into the hijab controversy and asked him to ‘guide the misguided girl students who are prioritising hijab more than education’. Ravi retweeted Akhater’s 2022 tweet in which he had claimed that the burqa curtails basic human rights.
  • The Karnataka BJP MLA also advised Javed Akhtar to guide “so called Journalists, Actresses, Anchors and Others supporting Hijab in Colleges to practice what they preach”.
  • “Burqa curtails basic human rights even if the woman inside the burqa is not aware of it,” the Bollywood lyricist had tweeted on August 3, 2011.

  • In 2019, Akhtar had stirred up a hornet’s nest by stating that he has no problem if the government brings a law to ban the burqa, but the move should be accompanied with a similar action against the ‘ghoonghat’ system.
  • Ravi’s tweet comes at a time when several personalities have sided with the girls wanting to wear hijab inside school and college premises, while some have asserted that dress code should be maintained in educational institutions.
  • Several parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Shaheen Bagh in Delhi witnessed protests over the ongoing hijab row in Karnataka.
  • Meanwhile, the single judge of the Karnataka High Court hearing the Hijab ban in school-college campuses case referred the matter to Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi.
  • Several Karnataka colleges witnessed protests on Tuesday against the wearing of the headscarf by Muslim women students.
  • With the court referring the matter to the CJ, Karnataka Education Minister BC Nagesh said that the government notification in regards to the dress code will continue to remain in effect. Uniform is compulsory for students to attend classes, the minister stressed.
