KEY STORY

  • Rohit Sharma  & Co. made sure India extended their winning run in the limited-overs format as the Asian giants registered another comfortable win over the West Indies on Wednesday. With India recording its first OD series white-wash over the West Indies at home earlier, the Men from the Caribbean were seeking redemption in the series opener of the three-match T20I opera at the Eden Gardens.
  • The visitors were also boosted by the return of skipper Kieron Pollard, who missed the previous two matches of the West Indies in their ongoing tour of India. The West Indies skipper had earlier suffered a niggle which ruled him out of the second and third ODIs of the bilateral series. Winning the toss ahead of the series opener at the famous Eden Gardens Stadium, skipper Rohit confirmed that spinner Ravi Bishnoi has received his debut cap for the 1st T20I.

  • 1) Pooran fires fifty
Debutant in the 1st T20I at Kolkata on Wednesday, Bishnoi made a jittery start as his costly error paved the way for Nicholas Pooran to punish the Indian bowlers in the curtain-raiser of the T20I series. Signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for a whopping sum of INR 10.75 crore, Pooran played a whirlwind knock of 61 off 43 balls. Pooran’s quick-fire knock lifted the Pollard-led West Indies side to 157-7 in the 20-over contest.

  • 2) Bishnoi bounces back
Overcoming what many believed was a nervy start to an international career, Bishnoi troubled the West Indies batters with his Googlies and wrong’uns in his 4-over spell. Even though Bishnoi leaked plenty of extras through wides (6), the Indian youngster scalped crucial wickets of Roston Chase and Rovman Powell in his debut match for Team India. Bishnoi also managed to rewrite history by recording the third-best figures (2-17) by a spinner for Team India on a T20I debut.

  • 3) Rohit and Surya ace the chase
Leading the hosts from the front, skipper Rohit demolished the potent West Indies bowling attack in the Powerplay. Nicknamed The Hitman, the veteran opener smoked 3 and struck 3 boundaries in his opening blitz for the Asian giants. With a strike rate of 210.53, Rohit smashed 40 off 19 balls as India scored 63 runs inside the first 7 overs. After losing Rohit in the 8th over, India also parted ways with Ishan Kishan, Virat K.

Middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav teamed up with Venkatesh Iyer to make sure India recover from a mini batting collapse. Suryakumar played a crucial knock for India which powered the hosts to a comfortable win over the West Indies. Suryakumar (34*) and Iyer’s (24) batting heroics guided India to a six-wicket win in the series opener. Rohit-led India will play the 2nd T20I at the same venue on Friday.
