KEY STORY

  • New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson faced the wrath of Indian fans on social media after dismissing Team India skipper Virat Kohli in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) final in Southampton. Jamieson trapped Kohli lbw during India’s first innings on Day 3 of the ongoing summit clash to help New Zealand bundle out India cheaply.
  • Several Indian fans abused Jamieson on his Instagram posts after he dismissed Kohli on 44 off 132 balls. It was a brilliant delivery from the tall right-arm pacer which trapped Kohli plumb in front of the wicket. While some fans urged Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to cancel his IPL contract, others resorted to abuse him.

  • Resuming India’s first innings from 146/3 on Day 3, Kohli was the first batsman to be dismissed before Rishabh Pant followed suit. The young left-hander was also dismissed by Jamieson, who ended up with a magnificent five-wicket haul.
  • Ajinkya Rahane top-scored for India with 49 off 117 balls while R Ashwin (22) and Ravindra Jadeja (15) added 23 runs for the seventh wicket as India managed to post 217 runs.
  • Jamieson was the pick of the bowlers for Kane Williamson & Co. as he finished with figures of 5/31 including the important scalps of Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Pant. Trent Boult and Neil Wagner picked up two wickets apiece.
  • In reply, openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway got New Zealand off to a great start in their first innings.

CONCLUSION

  • Latham and Conway posted an opening stand of 70 runs before R Ashwin struck to get India their first breakthrough. Ishant Sharma then got rid of Conway on 54 towards the end of the day’s play.
  • New Zealand were 101/2 at stumps and have a slight edge in the final as they have wickets in their hands and are currently trailing by 116 runs. The Kiwis will be hoping to overhaul India’s total and gain some lead on Day 4 (Monday).
