HIGHLIGHTS

  • Match 10 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 edition saw heavyweights Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) up against defending champions, Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) on Monday evening (September 28) in Dubai.
  • After a run-fest between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), both MI and RCB also were involved in another high-scoring affair. With MI needing 80 off the last 24 balls, the match went into the Super Over as RCB’s death-bowling continued to suffer.

Finch, Padikkal and ABD show for RCB

  • Opting to bowl first, Rohit-led MI didn’t find success with the ball, early on, as RCB openers, Aaron Finch and Devdutt Padikkal looked in sublime form. The Aussie limited-overs captain came out with positive intent, took his chances, missed out on a few occasions but remained undeterred with his approach.
  • He slammed his first IPL fifty for the Bengaluru franchise. While he departed soon after, skipper Virat Kohli came out to bat at No. 3.
  • De Villiers (55*- 24b, 4×4, 4×6), arguably the best athlete in international cricket for years, is also keeping wicket to give RCB great balance.

  • Kohli’s poor form continued as he never looked in comfort and handed an easy catch to his counterpart Rohit, at short covers, off Rahul Chahar.
  • Losing two quick wickets, followed by some tidy overs, RCB were on the back foot for a bit. However, Padikkal remained calm, accelerated when required to reach his second fifty in the tournament.
  • Shivam Dube hit sixes off James Pattinson’s final over, the last one taking the score past 200.

CONCLUSION

Rohit Sharma chose to bowl despite only three out nine games having been won by teams chasing. It ended in a tie, second of the edition, after sensational hitting by Ishan Kishen (99-58b, 2×4, 9×6) and Kieron Pollard (60*-24b). RCB scored 201 and MI, despite an early wobble, reached 201/5 with Pollard’s last-ball four.
However, 22-year-old Ishan Kishen’s anchoring knock and Pollard’s typical power-hitting set up a thrilling finale
In the Super Over, MI were restricted to 7/1 by Navdeep Saini. RCB reached the target on the last ball of the Super Over with Virat Kohli hitting Jasprit Bumrah for a four.
