Legendary Sunil Gavaskar honoured by BCCI on golden jubilee of his India debut in Ahemdabad

  • On this day in 1971, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar made his international debut for India in a Test match against West Indies in Port of Spain.
  • One of the greatest batsmen of all-time, Gavaskar went on to have an illustrious career and helped Indian cricket reach new heights with his batting exploits, which earned him plaudits all around the globe.
  • It was on March 6, 1971, that Gavaskar had donned the India jersey for the first time. The ‘Little Master’ as he was fondly called by the fans back in the day, scored two back-to-back half-centuries in his maiden Test.
  • He notched up a brilliant 65 in the first innings followed by an unbeaten 67 as India defeated West Indies by 7 wickets in the Test match.
  • It did not take Gavaskar long to announce himself in international cricket and what followed was a magnificent career as he became the first batsman in the world to reach the milestone of 10,000 runs in Test cricket.
  • On the golden jubilee of his India debut on Saturday, BCCI honoured him at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
  • Gavaskar was presented with a special cap that read “Celebrating 50 years”. The India legend also received a guard of honour from his fellow commentators. BCCI secretary Jay Shah presented the cap to Sunil Gavaskar.

  • Gavaskar played 125 Tests and 108 ODIs in his international career, amassing 10122 and 3092 runs in the two formats respectively. He scored 34 Test centuries and 45 half-centuries. In ODIs, he slammed 1 hundred and 27 fifties. He was known for his unwavering temperament and tremendous technique.
