‘Lockdown from July 1 to 31’: Govt busts fake news, says no such update by PM Modi on third Covid-19 wave

  • The government on Wednesday bust a fake post on social media that claimed a lockdown will be imposed for the month of July in wake of the imminent third wave of Covid-19. The post quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi as having made the announcement.
  • The fake piece of news also suggested that the third wave of Covid-19 has already started. However, it was quickly busted by the Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check Team on Twitter.
  • It further advised people to continue following Covid-19 appropriate behaviour, including wearing masks, practicing hand washing with soap and water and following physical distancing in public.
  • An alert was also issued to not share such fake news to mislead people amidst the pandemic.

On Sunday, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) clarified that the third wave of Covid-19 is likely to come late, giving a window period of six-eight months to immunise the entire population of the country.
“The ICMR has come up with a study which says the third wave is likely to come late. We have a window period of 6-8 months to immunise everybody in the country. In the coming days, our target is to administer one crore doses every day,” Dr NK Arora, Chairman, COVID working group said on Sunday.
He said that by July-end or in August, vaccines for children of 12-18 age group may be made possible. As per experts, the third wave being dangerous for kids, or affecting them in larger numbers does not have any scientific backing yet, and is based on speculations.
