Right-arm pacer Mohammed Siraj made his Test debut for India in the second Test against Australia along with the talented Shubman Gill. While Gill replaced opener Prithvi Shaw in the playing XI, Siraj was roped in as a replacement for injured fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who has been ruled out of the series.
Siraj, who had recently lost his father, had decided to not to return home and stay with the team in Australia. His sacrifice paid off as the pacer managed to pick two important wickets for the visitors on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Siraj dismissed a well-set Marnus Labuschagne on 48 to bag his maiden Test wicket before setting up Cameron Green perfectly to trap him LBW. The pacer spoke about his Test debut in a chat with India’s fielding coach R Sridhar after the conclusion of Day 1’s play. BCCI shared a video of the fun chat between the duo from Hyderabad.
“Maza aagya aapko ground me dekh kr, ekdam maut daal diye miya,” – Sridhar told Siraj during the chat. “Maut daal diye bhai,” the pacer responded after finishing the day with two wickets to his credit in his maiden Test.

Siraj further said that getting his maiden India Test cap has to be the biggest achievement in his life so far. The right-arm quick praised stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane for giving him confidence on his debut and senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who he sid was by his side to guide him at the SCG.
“I was feeling really good. Getting the India Test cap is my life’s biggest achievement. I did not get bowling till lunch. Bowlers did really well after the drinks. I liked talking with Azzu bhai (Ajinkya Rahane) because he was giving me confidence and Jasprit Bumrah was also standing besides me. He also gave me confidence,” said Siraj.
Siraj finished the day with figures of 2/40 in his 15 overs as Indian bowlers produced a stellar effort to bowl out Australia on 195 in their first innings. Bumrah was the wrecker-in-chief for India with a four-wicket haul while R Ashwin picked up three wickets.
