Monsoon rains finally reached Delhi after a long wait that also witnessed spells of heatwave conditions. With this, the monsoon has covered the entire country after a delay of five days, the India Meteorological Department said. The monsoon arrival is 16 days behind the usual date of onset, making it the most delayed monsoon in 19 years, according to the IMD.

Meanwhile, heavy rains were witnessed in most parts of Delhi on Tuesday morning and the weather department predicted thunderstorms and light to moderate intensity rains in the NCR region over the next few hours.

“Southwest Monsoon has advanced into Delhi today, the 13th July, 2021,” IMD said in a tweet announcing the arrival of the monsoon in the national capital.

“Finally Monsoon Rains over Delhi! Even though monsoon conditions were prevailing last 2-3 days, @Indiametdept was waiting for these rains to declare monsoon onset. Last 2 days it rained everywhere surrounding Delhi, except Delhi,” Madhavan Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences said in a tweet.

IMD under fire for incorrect monsoon prediction

Rains were recorded in most parts of the city and visuals showed moderate to light intensity rains in various areas. The arrival of the southwest monsoon hopefully puts an end to the dry spell that the national capital has been witnessing over the past few weeks.

While the IMD had previously predicted the likelihood of monsoon rains on several occasions, the weather monitoring agency denied any inaccuracy in its monsoon prediction model.
-
“It is needless to mention that IMD has predicted well with high accuracy about the advance of monsoon over Delhi in the recent past years and also the advance of monsoon over different parts of the country during monsoon 2021, about four to five days ahead,” IMD said in a statement.
