KEY STORY

  •  Ahead of farmers’ planned protest in front of Parliament Parliament during its monsoon session from Monday, the Delhi Police has directed the Delhi Metro to keep extra vigil at seven metro stations and close them if needed.
  • The seven metro stations that are likely to remain shut are Janpath, Lok Kalyan Marg, Patel Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Mandi House and Udyog Bhawan.
  • The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has directed the authorities to put these seven metro stations on alert.
  • Earlier today, officials of the Delhi Police had met a delegation of farmers ahead of their planned protest.
  • The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of over 40 farmer unions, has planned that around 200 farmers will hold protests outside Parliament every day during the monsoon session to demand scrapping of the contentious farm laws and a legal guarantee on MSP.
  • The farmer leaders have maintained that the protests will be “peaceful”.
  • Delhi had witnessed violent protests during a tractor parade on January 26 as thousands of agitators clashed with the police, broke through barriers, overturned vehicles and hoisted a religious flag from the ramparts of the iconic Red Fort.

CONCLUSION

  • The SKM recently issued a “chetavani patra” (warning letter) to all opposition MPs to protest the farm laws inside the House.
  • Thousands of farmers from across the country have been protesting at the Delhi borders against the three farm laws, expressing apprehensions that the Acts will do away with the Minimum Support Price system.
  • So far, several rounds of talks have been held between the Centre and farmer leaders to break the deadlock between the two parties
