Saudi Arabia curbs visitors, bans travel from India and 19 other nations

  • New Delhi: Amid the rising number of coronavirus cases, Saudi Arabia on Thursday suspended entry of people from at least 20 countries, including India. The Indian Embassy in Riyadh posted its advisory on Twitter mentioning, “Kingdom of Saudi Arabia vide its circular dated 2nd February 2021 have temporarily suspended entry into the Kingdom for passengers coming from the following 19 countries, in addition to India.”
  • As per the advisory, Saudi Arabia has restricted travel from India, Argentina, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, the United States of America, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Pakistan, Brazil, Portugal, United Kingdom, Turkey, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Lebanon, Egypt, and Japan.

  • The advisory stated, “Those Indian citizens desirous of coming to Saudi Arabia are advised not to transit through any of the above countries.”
  • Additionally, all Indian nationals have been advised to kindly ascertain COVID-related travel current guidelines at the time of travel, both in the country of transit as well as Saudi Arabia.
  • It is worth adding that according to Johns Hopkins University the coronavirus count in Saudi Arabia has reached 371,356 while the death toll has increased to 6,415.
  • Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi has asked Indians stuck in Dubai to consider returning and make their travel plans once the curbs are lifted.
  • People quarantining in Dubai and those who were en route to Saudi were left in the lurch because of the sudden travel ban announcement, and decided to stay put in the hope that the curbs on the travel will be lifted soon.
