KEY STORY

  • Indian opener Rohit Sharma was in splendid form as India fought back on Day 3 of the ongoing second Test against England at Headingley in Leeds. Rohit combined with Cheteshwar Pujara to help India fightback after the visitors lost KL Rahul cheaply on just 8 off 54 balls. Rohit continued his stellar run in the series and notched up another half-century.
  • Rohit, who has been criticised by many for his pulls shots and not curbing his attacking instincts, went for a stylish upper-cut against Ollie Robinson during India’s second innings to leave many impressed. In the 16th over of India’s second innings, Robinson bowled a bouncer outside off, which was spotted well by the Hitman.
  • Rohit, who is a formidable force against short balls and bouncers, played a brilliant shot to help the ball sail over the third man for a six. The Hitman looked in complete control of the shot which left commentators Sunil Gavaskar and Sanjay Manjrekar impressed as they heaped praise on the Indian opener.
  • “That’s the Rohit Sharma we know,” said Manjrekar, reacting to Rohit’s shot. “Yes, that’s the white-ball Rohit Sharma. Did it quite deliberately, jumped up with the bounce and it was a safe shot,” said Gavaskar on air.

  • India dominated the proceedings on Day 3 of the third Test in Leeds as Rohit and Cheteswar Pujara helped the visitors fight back after the early dismissal of Rahul. The duo added 82 runs for the second wicket with Rohit notching up 59 off 156 deliveries laced with seven fours and a six.

CONCLUSION

  • Pujara ended the day unbeaten on 91 off 180 balls and was well supported by skipper Virat Kohli, who looked in fine form for his 45 not out off 94 balls. Chasing England’s first-innings total of 432 runs after a terrible collapse on 78 runs in their first innings, India posted 215/2 at stumps on Day 2 and ended the day trailing the hosts by 139 runs.
  • The visitors will hope for Kohli and Pujara to continue their third-wicket stand on Day 4 (Saturday) and help India amass a healthy lead.
