Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan to review COVID-19 situation in four states amid surge in cases

  • Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan will review the COVID-19 situation and the progress of the vaccination in four states – Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat on Saturday amid a surge in fresh infections.
  • “At 3 pm today, I’ll be holding a video conferencing with Health Ministers of UP, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat to review the current COVID-19 situation and progress of vaccination drive in their respective States,” ANI quoted Vardhan as saying.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central government has been facing heat from opposition leaders over its handling of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, which has hit the country’s healthcare system badly and led to a shortage of medical oxygen and hospital beds in many states.

COVID-19 situation in India

  • Earlier today, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed that a total of 3,26,098 new COVID-19 infections were reported in the last 24 hours in India, pushing the country’s cumulative caseload to 2,43,72,907.
  • As many 3,890 more people succumbed to the deadly virus in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of fatalities to 2,66,207, as per the ministry’s data.
  • The new fatalities include 695 from Maharashtra, 373 from Karnataka, 311 from Uttar Pradesh, 289 from Delhi, 288 from Tamil Nadu, 181 from Uttarakhand, 180 from Punjab, 172 from Chhattisgarh, 164 from Haryana, 155 from Rajasthan, 136 from West Bengal and 104 from Gujarat.
