KEY STORY

  • Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli arrived in Chennai on Thursday to join his side’s training camp ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Kohli will be leading RCB in the upcoming season and will be looking to bring an end to his side’s title drought in the cash-rich league and inspire them to their maiden triumph this year.
  • RCB have been training in Chennai for a while now as the players continue to arrive. Kohli will be serving a mandatory quarantine period at the team’s hotel before hitting the ground running for the new season. Earlier, RCB had shared pictures of star batsman AB de Villiers arriving in Chennai for IPL 2021.
  • “If you thought we were done breaking the internet for the day, think again,” RCB captioned the post with a picture of a masked-up Kohli from Chennai.
  • While Kohli will be leading the side once again this season, the run-machine is also confirmed to open the batting for RCB in IPL 2021. RCB’s Director of Cricket Mike Hesson had on Wednesday confirmed that Kohli will be opening with Devdutt Padikkal in the upcoming season.
  • Hesson said it’s a position that Kohli knows well and has done well while batting as an opener in the past. Kohli’s best season as a batsman in IPL came in 2016 when he notched up a staggering 973 runs in 16 matches while opening for the team. He slammed four hundreds and seven fifties in the tournament.

CONCLUSION

  • “Look for me, form is important. More importantly, it’s about the confidence that they bring in. Some players need performance to get that confidence. Some don’t. Virat is so experienced with RCB. He is going to bat at the top of the order. It’s a position that he knows well,” Hesson told reporters during a virtual presser on Wednesday.
  • Kohli’s RCB will open their campaign against defending champions Mumbai Indians in the season-opener on April 09.
