Virat Kohli equals MS Dhoni’s incredible captaincy record with India’s massive win over England in Chennai

  • By leading Team India to a big 317-run win over England in the 2nd Test match, Virat Kohli matched an incredible record held by former India captain MS Dhoni. With 21 wins, Dhoni was sitting at the top spot on the list of most wins by an Indian captain at home.
  • Kohli was just one win short of the record and had to wait for 15 months to equal Dhoni’s milestone. He now shares the numero uno position with his former captain and is likely to go past him in the ongoing series.
  • Dhoni, who led Team India to 21 wins, captained the side in 30 matches at home. Kohli has led India in 28 Tests at home so far. Talking of overall figures, Dhoni captained the side in 60 Test matches. Under him, India won 27 and lost 18 Tests.
  • Kohli, India’s most-successful Test captain, has led Team India in 58 Tests so far. India have won 34 and lost 14 matches under him. By the 4th Test, Kohli will join Dhoni at the top spot on the list of most matches as India captain.
  • Kohli had taken over as India’s Test captain on the tour of Australia in 2014/15. Under him, India have won two back-to-back Border-Gavaskar Trophies. Also, India have only lost 2 home Tests under his captaincy.

  • With Kohli still having many years left in him, he is likely to create many more captaincy records in the years to come. For now, India are aiming to qualify for the final of the ICC World Test Championship.
  • Talking of the Test match, the home team rode on Rohit Sharma’s 161 and R Ashwin’s all-round performance to register a series-levelling win. Kohli also played a pivotal role in the win and scored a gritty 62 off 149 in the 3rd innings of the Test.
  • Chasing 482, England were never in contention to chase down the target and lost the game by a big margin. With the win, India have climbed to the second spot in the ICC World Test Championship table.
