KEY STORY

  • Indian cricket team captain has often been compared with the likes of Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, Joe Root and most recently Babar Azam whenever the cricketing world debates ‘the best batsman in the world’ tag. Though it is Pakistan cricket team captain Babar who presently holds the No. 1 spot in ICC ODI Rankings, retired cricketer Mohammad Yousuf feels Kohli is the best batsman in the world in the present generation.
  • Speaking on YouTube show Cricast, Yousuf shed light on the attributes that make Kohli the finest batsman of this generation though the Pakistan cricket legend also stressed that comparisons between players of different eras are unfair.
  • “I’ve never seen him practice but have followed some of his training videos on Twitter and other places. In today’s era, if someone asks me what is modern cricket, I’d say it’s about training. The players today are fit and fast, as is Virat Kohli, which is the reason behind his terrific performances,” Yousuf said on the YouTube show.
  • Kohli holds a top 5 rank across formats in the ICC ODI Rankings. His numbers in all three formats are phenomenal. Yousuf, who himself is one of the top-scoring batters for Pakistan in international cricket, hailed the way Kohli progressed in his career, ruling the charts in almost every aspect possible.
  • “He has 70 centuries in ODIs and Tests combined. In ODIs, he has some 12000 runs and is approaching the 10,0000 mark in Tests as well. In T20I as well, he has some great numbers. His performance in all three formats is high-class.

CONCLUSION

  • In today’s era, he is the No.1 batsman. I have earlier said as well that comparisons with the players of the previous era in unfair. Despite that, his performances are unbelievable,” Yousuf further said.
  • Considering the amount of cricket the Indian team plays, Kohli has shown incredible consistency to perform at the level he does. The Indian captain already holds some of the biggest records in world cricket and he looks destined to achieve even more by the time he hangs up his boots.
