KEY STORY

  • Dark circles under the lower eyelids are common in men and women. It is a part of not just natural ageing, but also a reflection of several other factors that are not always under our control.
  • In most cases, they are no cause for concern and do not require medical attention. Some common causes of baggy eyes or dark circles include:
  • Genetics: No amount of care is going to help you overwrite genetic coding. So, if dark circles around your eyes run in your family, expect yourself to develop the same.
  • Too much sun: Overexposure to the sun can cause your body to produce an excess of melanin that causes pigmentation in the skin surrounding the eyes.
  • Medical conditions: Health problems such as thyroid disease, bowel and kidney issues, etc. can also cause dark circles around the eyes.
  • Fatigue: Sleep deprivation, oversleeping, extreme fatigue cause fluid to build underneath your eyes, causing them to appear puffy.
  • Natural ageing: As you get older, your skin becomes thinner. You also lose the fat and collagen that kept your skin firm and elastic in the earlier years. The dark blood vessels beneath your skin make the skin there appear darker.
  • Eye strain: Too much digital screen time, watching TV etc.
  • Allergies: Your body’s immune response to allergens – releasing histamines to flush out the harmful bacteria. As a result, you suffer itchiness, redness, and puffy eyes. Dark under-eye skin follows.
  • Dehydration: Not drinking enough water, constipation, dry skin – all this make your eyes look sunken.

Home remedies to treat under-eye dark circles:

  1. Cucumber slices: Cucumber has skin-lightening and mild astringent properties. Use it as cold compresses to fix raccoon eyes naturally. Use fresh slices that are thin and water-rich. First, refrigerate them (placed in a clean plate) for 30 minutes. Then place the slices on your eyes for 10 minutes. Rinse your eye area with warm water.
  2. Cold tea bags: Several teas like green tea act as antioxidants, which have anti-inflammatory properties. Soaking them in clean water, refrigerating them for 30 minutes and then using them as cold compresses on your closed eyes helps soothe strained capillaries in your under-eye area. Leave on shut eyes for 10 minutes every day. Remove bags and rinse your face with warm water.
  3. Potato juice application: Potatoes are natural skin-bleaching agents, rich in the enzyme called catecholase, that lightens and brightens the skin over time. The Vitamin C in potatoes have skin brightening and collagen-boosting properties. Refrigerate a potato for 30-60 minutes. Cut thin slices and place it on your eyes for 10 minutes. Rinse off with cold water. Do this twice a day for two weeks. Optionally, you can also add some aloe vera juice or a tbsp of coffee in 2-3 tbsp of potato juice.
  4. Rosewater and whole milk cotton pads: Mix rosewater and whole milk in the proportion 2:1. Use spoons as a measure and do not prepare in excess quantity. Soak two cotton pads in the mixture and cover your eye area. Leave soaked-squeezed pads on eyes for 20 minutes. Rinse with normal water after removing pads.
  5. Turmeric and mint-leaves mash: Take pureed mint leaves and add 2 pinches of turmeric to them. Mix well. Apply the mixture on the skin under the eyes, leave it on to dry. After about 20 minutes since application, wash with cold water.
Apart from these Do-It-Yourself (DIY) remedies, it is also essential that you make lifestyle changes such as sleeping on time, honouring the Circadian rhythm, eating nutritious food, relaxing, avoiding putting on excess weight, practising meditation, etc. Remember to care for your skin.
Use a lighter moisturiser during the daytime with an SP. At night use a special eye cream that will help eye skin heal.
