KEY STORY

  • After testing positive for Covid-19 in the Sunrisers Hyderabad camp during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman has defeated the virus. The veteran cricketer tested negative for Covid-19 and is now eligible to travel to Mumbai and join his teammates ahead of the tour of the United Kingdom.
  • Saha had made it to the 20-man Indian squad for the UK tour which will see the Indian team take on New Zealand in the World Test Championship final as well England in the 5-match Test series. Saha’s inclusion, however, was conditional as the Bengal stumper was isolated having contracted the virus.
  • “My quarantine period is still not over. As a part of the routine check-up, 2 tests were done, out of which 1 was negative and the other one came as positive. Otherwise, I am doing much better. Requesting everyone not to spread misleading stories/information without the whole context,” Saha had said in a social media post, informing fans of his health status.
  • On May 04, SRH’s Saha, as well as Delhi Capitals’ Amit Mishra, had returned positive RT-PCR tests, prompting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to suspend the remainder of the IPL Season 14. Saha has since been in quarantine but is now allowed to move out. The player, however, won’t have much time to spend at home as he would be required to enter the BCCI bubble created ahead of the UK tour.

CONCLUSION

  • Ahead of the June 02 departure for England, the 20 players selected for the tour will all quarantine in Mumbai, beginning May 19. The WTC final is scheduled to being on June 18 while the 5-match England series will take place in August-September.
  • Saha is a part of the squad but isn’t expected to feature in many matches. Since last year, Rishabh Pant seems to have become the No. 1 wicket-keeper for the Indian team in the longest format. The southpaw is likely to take the role behind the stumps for the entire UK tour too.
