  • New Delhi: Bank unions have called for a two-day strike starting March 15, to protest against the proposed privatisation of banks meaning several bank branches will remain closed on account of the upcoming proposed strike by banking associations in March.
  • Banks will be closed for two-day strike on March 15 (Monday) and March 16 (Tuesday). Since the previous two days March 13 is a second saturday and March 14 is a Sunday, banks will remain closed for four days in a row.
  • Besides, banks across the country will remain closed for a total of 11 days in the month of March. This includes the four Sundays and two second Saturdays.
  • Reserve Bank of India places its Holidays under three brackets –Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act; Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holiday; and Banks’ Closing of Accounts. All-India holidays include Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15), and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), Christmas Day (December 25). Festivals like Diwali, Christmas, Eid, Guru Nanak Jayanthi, Good Friday, and so on are also bank holidays.
  • According to the central bank’s Holiday Calendar for March 2021, there are as many as 5 days in March that will see banks across different states closed for work. The banks will remain close on March 5, 11, 22, 29 and 30.

  • “We have been advised by lndian Banks Association (lBA) that united Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) which comprises 9 major Unions, viz. All lndia Bank Employees’Association (AIBEA), All lndia Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC), National Confederation of Bank Employees (NCBE), All lndia Bank Officers’ Association (AIBOA), Bank Employees Federation of lndia (BEFI), lndian National Bank Employees Federation (INBEF), lndian National Bank Officers’ Congress (INBOC), National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW) & National Organisation of Bank Officers (NOBO), has given a call for all lndia strike by Bank Employees on 15th & 16th March, 2021,” said SBI in a regulatory filing.
  • The working of State Bank of India (SBI) is likely to be affected on March 15 and 16 due to the nationwide strike on these days.
  • “While Bank has made all arrangements to ensure normal functioning in its branches and offices, it is likely that work in
    our Bank may be impacted by the strike”, said the lender in the filing.

  • Bank customers planning a visit to their respective banks in the month of March are advised to plan their visit in accordance with the bank holidays and strikes.
  • It is worth remembering that while the bank branches will remain closed on these holidays, mobile and internet banking will remain functional as usual. Customers can make transactions through online modes.
