Govt extends PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline to March 2022

  • The government has extended the last date for linking Aadhaar with PAN. The last date for linking Aadhaar with PAN will now be March 31, 2022. Earlier, the last date to link PAN card with Aadhaar card was September 30, 2021. There has been an extension of 6 months granted for PAN-Aadhaar linking.
  • In a statement, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said to address the hardship being faced by various stakeholders on account of the COVID-19 pandemic, the timeline has been extended which will ease compliance.
  • “Time limit for intimation of Aadhaar number to the Income tax Department for linking of PAN with Aadhaar has been extended from 30th September 2021 to 31st March 2022,” it said.
  • Also, the due date for the completion of penalty proceedings under the I-T Act has been extended from September 30, 2021 to March 31, 2022.
  • Further, the time limit for issuance of notice and passing of order by the Adjudicating Authority under the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act, 1988 has been extended to March 2022.

    How to check PAN-Aadhaar link status online? 
  • On the new portal, you may check the status of your PAN-Aadhaar link. You just have to click on “Link Aadhaar Status” and input your PAN and Aadhaar number to see whether the documents have been linked successfully. You can also check your status through SMS. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number, leave a space, and then type your 10-digit PAN number. Then, from your registered cellphone number, send the message to 567678 or 56161. The response will be sent as a message.
  • The linking of Aadhaar and PAN card is required since it allows the government to keep track of taxable financial activities and identify them. It assists in the prevention of tax evasion.
