  • The result of the series also helped the Indian team leapfrog Australia as well as leaders New Zealand to go top of the points table in the World Test Championship.
  • The revised format of the World Test Championship due to the Covid-19 pandemic had hurt the Indian team’s chances of qualifying for the final of the tournament in Lord’s.
  • As per the new rule, the win percentage (PCT) and the number of points decided the positioning of the team in the points table. While it looked like the Indian team could miss out because of the revised rule, Ajinkya Rahane’s men produced one of its finest performances in the whites to go top of the points table.

  • The Indian team still has two important series left in the ongoing World Test Championship.
  • The next series in the tournament will begin at home against England in early February before India take on highly-impressive New Zealand. Both the series will feature two matches each.
  • As per the current standings, India are first with 71.7% PCT whereas the Kiwis have 70 PCT. Australia is on 69.2 PCT after losing the series 2-1. England are currently at fourth with 65.20 PCT.

CONCLUSION

  • The Indian team would remain top in the WTC if they win two of their four matches against England.
  • Australia and New Zealand are the other sides in contention for a spot in the Test Championship final while England are also in the fray. The Englishmen would need to put in their best performances in the coming fixtures in order to stand a chance of making it to the top two.
