KEY STORY

  • In a bid to push for greater coverage of COVID-19 vaccination, the Chamarajanagar district administration in Karnataka has adopted stern measures.
  • MR Ravi, Deputy Commissioner of Chamarajanagar district, informed Wednesday that they have launched two slogans to deny certain facilities to people who have chosen not to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • The two slogans are: ‘no vaccination, no ration’ and ‘no vaccination, no pension’.
  • Explaining the same, the Deputy Commissioner said: “We have launched a drive with the slogan ‘no vaccination, no ration’. To avail ration facility, BPL and Antyodaya cardholders, around 2.9 lakh in number, will need to take vaccine compulsorily.”
  • “We’ve also given the slogan of ‘no vaccination, no pension’. We have around 2.20 lakh pensioners in (Chamarajanagar) district. We have instructed all the banks in this regard. These measures are part of our efforts to vaccinate everyone in the district,” MR Ravi added.
  • However, the decisions are likely to trigger controversy. Further, it is also yet to be ascertained if the district administration has requisite powers to deny ration facility or pension to people on the grounds of them having not taken COVID-19 vaccines so far.
  • Meanwhile, the state of Karnataka reported 1,217 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday. Fresh 25 fatalities were also reported over a period of 24 hours.
