KEY STORY

  • Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) continued their winning run in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 on Wednesday as they defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six runs in their second game at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

  • Riding on David Warner and Manish Pandey’s partnership, SRH once looked on course for a comfortable win in pursuit of a 150-run target before Kohli & Co. pulled things back in style.
  • Asked to bat first, RCB lost opener Devdutt Padikkal (11) cheaply before skipper Kohli (33) and Glenn Maxwell (59) played crucial knocks to propel the team to a fighting total of 149 runs. Maxwell continued his fine form with the bat and slammed a brilliant 59 off 41 balls laced with 5 fours and 3 sixes. Rashid Khan and Jason Holder impressed with the ball for RCB picking up five wickets between them.

  • In reply, Sunrisers Hyderabad too got off to a stuttering start as they lost opener Wrioddhiman Saha cheaply on 1 before Warner and Pandey joined forces to post an 83-run stand for the second wicket and put the Orange Army in control. However, Warner’s departure in the 14th over triggered a massive collapse for SRH.
  • From 96/2 the Orange Army were reduced to 142/9 courtesy Shahbaz Ahmed’s game-changing 17th over where he accounted for the wickets of Manish Pandey, Jonny Bairstow and Abdul Samad to turn the tie on its head and script a fairytale win for RCB. A look at key highlights from the game.

Glenn Maxwell feeling at home with RCB

  • Glenn Maxwell had a horrendous run in IPL 2020 last year where he managed to score only 108 runs in 13 matches without a single fifty or a six. Despite his poor show, he was roped in by RCB for a whopping Rs 14.25 crore and has repaid the faith shown in him by the franchise in the first two games.

  • After scoring a crucial 39 in the season-opener against Mumbai Indians, Maxwell continued his fine form against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday. The Aussie star slammed a brilliant 59 off 41 deliveries to help RCB recover from a middle-order collapse and post a fighting total of 149 runs on the board.
Shabaz Ahmed produces a game-changing over
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad were once cruising in the 150-run chase and looked well on course to overhaul the target when Warner and Pandey were out in the middle. However, the SRH skipper’s dismissal paved way for an RCB comeback.

  • It was in the 17th over when SRH needed just 35 more to win off 24 balls that Shahbaz weaved his magic. He removed Bairstow and Pandey on successive deliveries before completing his over with the dismissal of Samad to completely turn the game in his side’s favour.

  • Chepauk witnesses another stunning collapse:

  • Chasing has not been easy at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and it was SRH, who were on the receiving end this time after KKR failed to gun down a moderate target of 153 runs on Tuesday despite getting close to the target with wickets in hand. Like KKR, SRH too looked in a comfortable position midway through the run-chase before falling apart in the death overs as RCB bowlers made a comeback.
