KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Match 47 of the ongoing IPL 2020 editions saw the David Warner-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) thrash Shreyas Iyer & Co. by 88 runs in Dubai.

  • With a defeat to bring an end to their IPL 2020 playoffs chances, the 2016 champions David Warner-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were in a must-win scenario when they locked horns with the second-positioned Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi Capitals (DC) in match 47 of the cash-rich league at the Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Tuesday (October 27).
  • While one may feel that the pressure was solely on the SRH camp, it wasn’t the case as Iyer & Co. came into this game on the back of two defeats on the trot.
  • Delhi’s poor show continued as they were hammered by Warner & Co. by a whopping 88-run margin.
  • With the win over DC, the Warner-led side has managed to remain alive in the race for the playoffs this season.
  • Opting to bowl first, Iyer-led DC bowlers were in for a leather hunt as Warner and his new opening partner Wriddhiman Saha attacked the opposition from the word go.
  • Saha, replacing Jonny Bairstow, started the onslaught whereas the birthday boy and skipper Warner came into the party soon.
  • With a six off Ravi Ashwin, the left-hander joined Saha as the two found the boundaries with a positive mindset and aggressive intent.
  • The two kept the runs coming and even took on the likes of Purple Cap holder Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje with ease.
  • While Warner fell for a 34-ball 66, Saha continued from his end and departed for a breathtaking 45-ball 87, an inning laced with 12 fours and two sixes.

  • Manish Pandey’s 44 not out propelled SRH to a mammoth 219/2 in 20 overs.
  • In reply, DC had to rely on their in-form opener Shikhar Dhawan, who became the first cricketer to register back-to-back tons in IPL history last week.
  • However, the left-hander departed for a golden duck to push DC on the back foot in their steep run-chase. Though Ajinkya Rahane got a start, he perished for a 19-ball 26.
  • Batting promotions for the likes of big-hitters such as Marcus Stoinis and Shimron Hetmyer couldn’t do anything for the DC line-up.
  • Apart from another slow and sluggish knock from Rishabh Pant, none of the DC mainstays took responsibility with the asking rate going up regularly.
  • Rashid Khan further tormented the DC batters to return with his best figures in IPL 13, 3 for 7, in his full quota of overs. He was well complemented by the likes of Sandeep Sharma, Shahbaz Nadeem and Vijay Shankar as SRH players didn’t put a wrong foot in the entire game.
  •  With two big defeats in a row, DC are surely in a spot of bother as they are yet to seal a playoff spot. Their remaining games are against Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
