Dhoni had led CSK to their fourth IPL title last month after they defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a high-scoring final in Dubai. Dhoni is the second most successful captain in the history of the competition behind Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma.
Due to Dhoni’s presence with Team India as a ‘mentor’ for the 2021 T20 World Cup, CSK had delayed their celebration. The event took place with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and former India captain Kapil Dev also present in the hall.
Dhoni had retired from international cricket in 2020. His last appearance for Team India was in the 2019 Cricket World Cup semi-final defeat to New Zealand. The 2011 World Cup-winning captain played his last international game on home soil in an ODI against Australia at Ranchi in March 2019.
Dhoni will be CSK’s first-choice retention if he doesn’t retire. All existing eight franchisees have the option to retain a maximum of four players before the mega-auction. The announcement is expected at the end of this month.
With the plans for the mega-auctions, most squads are expected to look very different from what they were this season. IPL 2022 will see the league expand to a 10 team event with franchisees from Ahmedabad and Lucknow entering the league.
Meanwhile, during CSK’s celebration, BCCI secretary Jay Shah made a big announcement and confirmed the 2022 season will take place in India. The COVID-19 pandemic had forced IPL 2020 and the second leg of IPL 2021 to take place in the United Arab Emirates.
