Sonu Sood Turned Residential Building Into Hotel, Alleges Mumbai Civic Body

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Actor Sonu Sood has been accused of illegally converting a residential building in Mumbai’s upscale Juhu into a hotel by Mumbai’s civic body BMC, which has also filed a police complaint.
  • The actor had offered the same six-storey building for quarantine facilities for medical professionals at the beginning of the coronavirus lockdown last year.
  • Following the complaint by the BMC or Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the police said they would investigate the case and take necessary steps.
  • Sonu Sood is yet to comment on the allegation.
  • A BJP leader reacted to the complaint and alleged that the BMC and the Maharashtra government are targeting Sonu Sood after another actor, Kangana Ranaut.
  • Ram Kadam said Mr Sood’s humanitarian work during the coronavirus pandemic did not go down well with the Shiv Sena-led government and so they were targeting him.
  • “Another vendetta politics by Shiv Sena? This complaint against social worker and actor Sonu Sood seems politically motivated. We saw how this Maharashtra government attacked and targeted Kangana Ranaut. Shiv Sena was always against Sonu Sood’s humanitarian work,” Mr Kadam tweeted.
  • “How many people’s voices are you going to suppress?” he tweeted in Hindi.
  • Sonu Sood was hailed as a hero after he helped a large number of migrants return home during the lockdown by hiring buses from Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra.
  • The 47-year-old actor, who was widely praised and later received several awards for his efforts during the pandemic, had even launched a toll-free helpline number to help those who needed assistance.
  • On September 9, the BMC demolished parts of Kangana Ranaut’s bungalow in the Pali Hill area for alleged “unauthorised” construction. This came soon after her comments on Twitter where she compared the city to “PoK” while criticizing the Mumbai police’s handling of the Sushant Singh Rajput case. She moved the High Court against the demolition.
  • The high court later termed the BMC’s action as illegal and malicious.
