  • Criticised by many as he fetched a whopping INR 14.25 crore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 auction by Royal Challengers Bangalore, Glenn Maxwell arguably turned out to be the best signing from the auction. The middle-order batsman produced a number of top performances, lifting RCB to a new level altogether. Yet, as the franchise was knocked out of the tournament, Maxwell was subjected to abuse on social media.
  • RCB bowed out of the IPL 2021 in the Eliminator against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) but the season, overall, saw them put in many memorable performances. Though a number of RCB players pulled their socks up in the 14th edition of the league, the biggest lift in performance arguably came from Maxwell who emerged as the team’s top-scoring batter with 513 runs to his name at an average of 42.75 and a strike-rate of 144.10.
  • The team, however, couldn’t go beyond the Eliminator, facing a narrow defeat against the Knight Riders on Monday. What followed, however, left Maxwell infuriated.
  • “Some of the garbage that has been following on social media is absolutely disgusting!” Maxwell wrote in a post on Twitter. “We are human beings who are giving our best each and every day. Try being a decent person maybe instead of spreading abuse.
  • “Thank you to the REAL fans that shared love and appreciation for the players giving their all! Unfortunately, there is some horrible people out there that make social media a horrible place to be. It is unacceptable!!! Please don’t be like them.”

Maxwell even warned those putting abusive comments on his and his friends/teammates’ accounts that they will be blocked from this very instance.
It wasn’t just Maxwell who courted abuse on social media but RCB all-rounder Dan Chrisitan also. Christian struggled in the game against KKR, conceding 29 runs from just 10 balls while scoring just 9 runs from 8.
Some irate fans bombarded his partner’s social media account after witnessing Christian put in a sorry performance. The veteran Aussie all-rounder requested the trolls to leave his partner out of this subject.
“I didn’t have a great game tonight, but that’s sport. However please leave her out of it,” wrote the Aussie.

RCB are now set for a big change from the 2022 season onwards. With skipper Virat Kohli stepping down, the franchise is on the look out for a new captain. Glenn Maxwell, who did very well from them this season, could be one of the options.
